Corridor of Uncertainty - Muscle Shoals Special - April 2014 by Muchomacho on Mixcloud

1.    Boz Scaggs - I'll Be Long Gone -

Boz Scaggs was backed by the legendary Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, given the nickname The Swampers by a certain Leon Russell who also recorded with them.

2.    Leon Russell  - Lady Blue

Roger Hawkins, David Hood, and Barry Beckett from the Swampers, toured for a while with Traffic. Winwood vocals - never a bad thing.

3.    Traffic - Dear Mr. Fantasy

The drummer from Traffic then with a bit of blue-eyed disco...

4.    Jim Capaldi – Shoe Shine

Jim Capaldi wrote the film soundtrack to The Contender , his last ever recording with the Muscle Shoals Rhythm section.  One of the huge number of artists they recorded with was Johnnie Taylor a.k.a. The Philosopher Of Soul....this was his great song that was sampled for Lola's theme by The Shapeshifters in 2004...

5.    Johnnie Taylor (What About My Love)

From the album "brothers" recorded at Muscle Shoals, comes the Black Keys' cover of the Jerry Butler track, "Never gonna give you up". Jerry Butler was in the same church choir, as Curtis Mayfield. The Staple Singers, who began recording at MS, then later Stax, ended up on Curtis' label, after Stax went bankrupt.

6.    Black Keys - Never Gonna Give You Up

from Black Keys to......

7.    Alicia Keys - Pressing On

Alicia Keys song is a cover of the Bob Dylan choon from his album Stranded. Playing keyboards on that album was Spooner Oldham from the Swampers (Muscle Shoals Rhythm section).  Spooner Oldham also co wrote songs with the legendary Dan Penn , who was a regular at FAME studios as a  performer , writer & producer.  one of the first songs Dan Penn wrote was arguably one of the greatest soul songs put on record.....

8.    James Carr - At the dark end of the street

Dan Penn also wrote, "the letter" by the box tops.
Here's a live cover version by Joe Cocker, great horn section & backing singers

9.    Joe Cocker "The Letter" live 1970

Dan Penn wrote The Letter, who also wrote 'Cry Like a Baby' recorded by Lulu, who recorded at Muscle Shoals this one, also covered by Joe Cocker

10. Lulu-Feelin' Alright

Backing singers on the Lulu lp were the legendary Sweet Inspirations (who could have a mix all of their own of people they've sung with)  It wouldn't be a Muscle Shoals mix without the Queen Of Soul and from one of her many recordings on Atlantic, on which the Sweet Inspirations sang backing vocals ,  comes this...  The lp was called Spirit In The Dark from 1970 and featured many of the Muscle Shoals session players...

11. Aretha Franklin - Don't Play That Song (You Lied) (Live)
